Swift/BAT detects renewed hard X-ray activity from XTE J1946+274

The Swift/BAT hard X-ray transient monitor reports renewed activity in the 15-50 keV band for the transient pulsar and Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 (GRO J1944+26). The pulsar has a known pulse period of 15.8 sec. Starting on 2010-June-04 (MJD 55351), the source has increased in intensity from an undetectable level (one-sigma upper limit of 0.0011 cts/cm2/sec or 5 mcrab) up to a current level of 0.0086 ± 0.0017 cts/cm2/sec (40 mcrab) on 2010-Jun-07. This is the highest rate ever seen in the BAT monitor and the first reported outburst of this source since July 2001 (Wilson et al, 2003, ApJ 584:996).
