We report the results of an X-ray follow-up observation performed with Swift/XRT of the
unidentified INTEGRAL source IGR J14488-5942, which is listed in the 4th INTEGRAL/IBIS Survey Catalogue (Bird et al. 2010, ApJS, 186, 1).
The Swift/XRT telescope pointed at the source region on 2009, September 25 for ~16.5 ks.
Within the IBIS error circle (4.3 arcmin, 90% error radius), we find two X-ray sources detected with a
statistical significance of 3.7 and 17 sigma, respectively. The fainter object (N1), which appears to be
soft being detected only below 3 keV, is located at RA(J2000) = 14h 49m 00.20s and Dec(J2000) = -59d 45m
03.7s (6 arcsec, 90% error radius) and has counterpart in a USNO-A2.0 object (U0300_22260671) having
magnitudes R ~11.9 and B ~14.6, which is also listed in the 2MASS survey with magnitudes
J ~9.0, H ~8.5 and K ~8.2.
The brighter source (N2), located at RA(J2000) = 14h 48m 43.33s and Dec(J2000) = -59d 42m 16.3s
(3.7 arcsec, 90% error radius), is still detected above 3 keV and has a counterpart in a 2MASS object
having magnitudes J ~15.5, H ~13.5 and K ~12.5. No optical counterpart is found for this object.
On the basis of the above characteristics, we consider source N2 as the most likely counterpart of the
IBIS source; its XRT spectrum is fitted with an absorbed (NH ~1.3 x 1023
cm-2) power law spectrum having
photon index ~3 and an observed 2-10 keV flux of 2.5 x 10-12 erg cm-2
s-1.
