We have observed the field of the X-ray transient A1744-36, suggested
to be the same as XTE J1748-361 (ATEL #204, #205). Observations
were made using the SMARTS 1.3m telescope at CTIO
with the ANDICAM camera in V, I and K bands. There is one
visible source consistent with the coordinates given in ATEL #205 which
has the following magnitudes: UT 2003 Nov 08.999-09.004:
V = 18.13 +/- 0.07, I = 16.00 +/- 0.05, K = 13.60 +/- 0.03;
UT 2003 Nov 10.001-10.006: V = 18.11 +/- 0.06, I = 16.04 +/- 0.04,
K=13.55 +/- 0.03. The source has not brightened significantly
over these two nights, nor has it brightened with respect to the
Digitized Sky Survey and 2MASS images. We conclude, therefore,
that either A1744-36 is not identical to XTE J1748-361 or that
the counterpart is not discernable at optical/infrared wavelengths.
The magnitude limits of our images are: V = 20.9, I = 19.7, K = 16.1.
