The MAXI/GSC nova alert system triggered on weak X-ray activity of the black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4 at 04:00 (UT) on October 18, 2023. The source has been detectable since October 13, and after that no significant increase in X-ray flux is recognized. The 2-10 keV X-ray flux on October 21 was 0.033 +/- 0.007 photons/cm2/s (about 10 mCrab).

Optical and X-ray observations with the Las Cumbres Observatory network and the Swift/XRT showed an almost simultaneous increase in flux in September (Alabarta et al. ATel #16260). The X-ray flux on September 23 was below 1 mCrab. These data suggest this outburst is fainter than a weak outburst starting on August, 2022 (Kobayashi et al. ATel #15577).
