MAXI/GSC detection of a new X-ray outburst from Terzan 5 or a new X-ray transient MAXI J1747-249

MAXI/GSC detects a bright outburst from the position marginally consistent with the globular cluster Terzan 5 at 17:26 on February 27, 2023. Assuming that the source flux was constant over eight transits from 18:57 on February 27 to 07:21 on February 28, we obtain the source position at (R.A., Dec) = (266.835 deg, -24.998 deg) = (17 47 20, -24 59 52) (J2000) with a statistical 90% C.L. elliptical error region with long and short radii of 0.17 deg and 0.13 deg, respectively. The roll angle of the long axis from the north direction is 17.0 deg counterclockwise. There is an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.1 deg (90% containment radius). The X-ray flux averaged over the scan was 89 +- 9 mCrab (4.0-10.0keV, 1 sigma error).

Terzan 5 contains three low mass X-ray binaries and 38 millisecond pulsars (Bogdanov et al. 2021, ApJ, 912, 124) The Swift/XRT followup observations are planed. Followup observations are also encouraged. Tentatively we name the source MAXI J1747-249.
