We report the independent discovery of a nova candidate in M31 with the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network on a 240 sec, SDSS r' image obtained on 2023 January 3 21:32:32 UTC. This object was independently discovered by Zhang and Gao (XOSS) and reported to TNS (AT 2023U, XM93MZ, PNV J00423797+4117130). Since this source is the first M31 nova candidate reported in 2023, we designate it as M31N 2023-01a. It is located at R.A. = 00:42:37.943, Dec = +41:17:13.13 (equinox J2000, astrometric calibration using Gaia DR3 stars). We measure a magnitude r' = 17.67 +/- 0.03, calibrated with PanSTARRS-1 DR2 stars. We encourage follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations. This work makes use of observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network. We thank David Bishop for his compilation of extragalactic novae.
