During an AGILE pointing at the North Galactic Pole region aiming at WComae, started on 2008 June 9 18:00 UT, SuperAGILE detected enhanced hard X-ray emission from the BL Lac source Mkn 421, lying approximately 17 degrees off-axis with respect to the center of the field of view. The measured average 20-60 keV flux was 32 mCrab between 2008 June 10 06:30 UT and 2008 June 11 06:30 UT, and 41 mCrab between 2008 June 11 06:30 UT and 2008 June 12 08:00 UT. The latest reported hard X-ray activity of Mkn 421 was on 2008 March when Swift/BAT (Krimm et al., ATel #1449) detected flaring activity from 22 to 110 mCrab in the 15-50 keV energy range. AGILE will continue on monitoring the same sky region for the next 3 days, with both the hard X-ray monitor SuperAGILE and the gamma-ray imager GRID.
