Spectroscopic classification of the intrinsically faint optical transient AT 2020hdh as Type Ic supernova

The intrinsically faint transient AT2020hdh was discovered on 2020-04-12 using Pan-STARRS1 as part of the "Pan-STARRS Search for Kilonovae" (Smartt et al. AstroNote 20-83; Smartt et al. AstroNote 2019-48). The transient was also identified with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF; Bellm et al. 2019, Graham et al. 2019) and saved as part of the "Census of the Local Universe" experiment (De et al. Astronote 2019-124, De et al. ATel 13546). We observed AT2020hdh with the Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM; Blagorodnova et al. 2018) mounted on Palomar 60-inch telescope (P60; Cenko et al. 2006) on 2020-04-16. The spectrum shows deep O I and Ca II features at z=0.012 that suggest the transient to be a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic). H-alpha and H-beta lines are also detected, but they are consistent with being narrow lines from the star-forming host galaxy at the resolution of P60/SEDM. We found a good match to the SN Ic 2004aw at the host redshift running SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007) on the spectrum after clipping galaxy lines.
