ASASSN-17dv and ASASSN-17ed: Discovery of Two Probable Supernovae

During the ongoing All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN, Shappee et al. 2014), using data from the quadruple 14-cm "Cassius" telescope in Cerro Tololo, Chile and the 14-cm "Brutus" telescope in Haleakala, Hawaii, we discovered two new transient sources, most likely supernovae, in the galaxies GALEXASC J095231.21-215754.7 and AM 0440-442.
ASASSN-17dv (AT 2017civ) was discovered in images obtained on UT 2017-03-22.34 at V~17.9 mag. We do not detect (V>18.2) the object in images taken on UT 2017-03-19.30 and before. Follow-up images obtained on 2017-03-23 confirm the discovery of the transient. This figure shows the archival Pan-STARRS (Chambers et al. 2016, arXiv:1612.05560) g-band image of the host (left) and the S. Kiyota confirmation image (right). The red circle has a radius of 5" and is centered on the position of the transient in the S. Kiyota image.
The position of ASASSN-17dv is approximately 0.2" North and 0.2" East from the center of the galaxy GALEXASC J095231.21-215754.7 (no redshift information available from NED).
ASASSN-17ed (AT 2017cnn) was discovered in images obtained on UT 2017-03-16.06 at V~16.8 mag. We do not detect (V>16.8) the object in images taken on UT 2017-03-15.11 and before. An image obtained on 2017-03-17 by J. Brimacombe confirms the discovery of the transient. This figure shows the archival DSS image of the host (left) and the J. Brimacombe confirmation image (right). The red circle has a radius of 5" and is centered on the position of the transient in the J. Brimacombe image.
The position of ASASSN-17ed is approximately 9.9" South and 4.0" West from the center of the galaxy AM 0440-442 (z=0.040308, d=171 Mpc, via NED), giving an absolute V-band magnitude of approximately -19.3 (m-M=36.08, A_V=0.032). Properties of the new sources and photometry are summarized in the tables below:

While we are participating in the TNS system to minimize potential confusion, ASAS-SN will continue using ASASSN-17xx transient names as our primary nomenclature (including supernovae, but also other classes of transients), and we encourage others to do the same. We prefer merging the names as ASASSN-17xx (AT 2017xyz) to preserve, rather than anonymize, the origin of the transient.
