The early Type Ia Supernovae PTFqjq and PTFqjl

The Type Ia supernova science working group of the Palomar Transient Factory (ATEL#1964) reports the discovery of two nearby supernovae, PTF10qjq and PTFqjl. PTF10qjq is at RA=17:07:12.39, Dec=+35:30:35.3 (J2000) at a redshift of 0.029. The supernova was discovered on Aug. 02.2 UT when it was at magnitude 17.7 in R-band (calibrated wrt the USNO catalog). There was nothing at this location on Jul 22 UT to a limiting magnitude 20.5. PTF10qjl is at RA=16:39:59.33, Dec=+12:06:25.5 (J2000) at a redshift of 0.058. It was discovered on Aug. 01.2 UT when it was at magnitude 18.3 in R-band. There was nothing at this location on Jul 24 UT to a limiting magnitude of 19.7. Confirmation spectra of both targets were taken with ISIS on the William Herschel Telescope telescope by M. Sullivan et al. on the night of Aug. 02 UT. Classification of the spectra was carried out using Superfit (Howell et al. 2005). Comparison to existing templates showed both to be SNe Ia younger than ~1 week before maximum light. Hubble Space Telescope STIS/UV spectroscopic observations of both supernovae were triggered by the ToO program "Verifying the Utility of Type Ia Supernovae as Cosmological Probes: Evolution and Dispersion in the Ultraviolet Spectra " (PI: R. Ellis).
