PTF discovery of a type II SN

The PTF (ATEL #1964) reports the discovery of a new supernova, PTF10fqx. The supernova was discovered and classified by Oarical, an autonomous software framework of the PTF collaboration, on March 27 UT at RA(J2000) = 16:46:01.27 and DEC(J2000) = +63:28:59.5 at a magnitude of 19.0 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNO catalog) in the galaxy UGC 10551. The supernova was not detected down to mag 21.0 in previous PTF images taken during 2009 (3-sigma). A spectrum was obtained using the Double-Beam Spectrograph (DBSP; Oke & Gunn 1982, PASP, 94, 586) on the Palomar 5-m Hale telescope on May 7 UT, revealing the supernova to be of type II, at z=0.017. The best match found using the superfit program (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ 634, 1190) is with SN 1999em at 75 days post-peak.
