We report the spectroscopic observation of the transient AT2019sou with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) in the framework of the 2019 NOT observing school.
The transient was discovered by the ATLAS survey on 2019-10-16 approximately 4" north-east of the galaxy WISEA J205659.14+025439.4. We observed it on 2019-11-04UT20:04 using grism4 of the Alhambra Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera ALFOSC (wavelength range 3200-9600 A, dispersion 3.3 A/px), with a single exposure of 2700 seconds. The classification was done with GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A&A, 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024).
The spectrum is consistent with that of a type Iax supernova, similar to SN 2005hk or SN 2002cx, at redshift z = 0.079, at approximately three weeks from the optical maximum.
